FANTASTIC FUTURE
What Elon Musk can teach Non-Profits about success.
Non-Profits have a problem like every other organization–too few resources.
Elon Musk needed a rocket so he went to Russia, drank shots of vodka, and asked to buy their ICBMs (as one does). They laughed at him and he left perturbed.
On the flight home, he busted out a spreadsheet detailing the costs of building a rocket himself.
LESSON ONE: Let “No” be the fuel that ignites innovation. Find another solution.
Non-Profits still make it about the money.
Elon walked away with $16 million from the sale of his first business. He took $12 million of that and started another company. That sold and his take was $180 million after taxes. He invested $100 of that in his new venture SpaceX which, after 20 years, is now valued at $36 billion.
LESSON TWO: It’s not about the money for Musk; it’s about the mission. And the money follows.
